Why buy an apartment in the Center of Madrid?

The Centro district is the most vibrant area with an extraordinary buzzing atmosphere, where you can find most of the historic sites and monuments that visitors come to see.

From the regal Palacio neighborhood, with its maze of medieval streets surrounding Plaza Mayor—Madrid’s grand main square—to the vivacious La Latina, Centro offers gorgeous, centuries-old architecture. It also boasts a vibrant nightlife scene, shops, and a variety of dining options ranging from tapas bars to gourmet food markets and some of Madrid’s oldest and most legendary restaurants.

Madrid Centro is also home to many world-renowned museums such as the Museo Nacional del Prado , the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza , and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. Within walking distance from each other, these museums offer easy access to the stunning Royal Palace, Catedral de la Almudena , Plaza de Oriente, the grand Plaza Mayor, Plaza de la Villa, Puerta del Sol, Gran Vía, Plaza Santa Ana, Mercado de San Miguel, Templo de Debod, El Rastro, and many other places of interest.

THE MADRID OF THE AUSTRIANS

This is the historic heart of Madrid, the oldest neighborhood, and one of the city’s most captivating and vibrant areas. Here, you’ll find nearly all of Madrid’s essential landmarks, from the Almudena Cathedral to Plaza Mayor.

The Madrid of the Austrians still preserves the beautiful architecture of the time, with streets full of history, a lively atmosphere, and its many restaurants serving traditional Madrilean food.

The Spanish monarchs of the House of Austria (or the Habsburgs), who ruled in the 16th and 17th c., initiated the expansion of the city and left their mark in a neighborhood they had embellished with stunning architecture that corresponds to the original medieval layout of the city. During that time of splendor when Spain possessed an enormous empire that extended to three continents, Felipe II chose Madrid to be the capital of the empire and moved the Court from Toledo to Madrid in 1561.

The heart of the Madrid of the Austrians rests in the Plaza Mayor, with its equestrian statue of Felipe III standing in the center. Full of atmosphere and packed with people, it is one of Europe’s most beautiful squares. From there you can start your tour to the Arco de Cuchilleros, Calle Arenal, Plaza de Oriente, Royal Palace, Almudena Cathedral, Monastery of the Descalzas Reales, Teatro Real, San Miguel market for top-quality tapas, Plaza de la Villa (one of the most emblematic Habsburg squares in Madrid), among other monuments. A curiosity: San Andrés Church is the only Gothic-style church that remains in Madrid.

CONDE DUQUE

Conde Duque is situated in the heart of the Universidad neighborhood, adjacent to Malasaña, and is becoming a trendy place to stay in Madrid.

Conde Duque is a tranquil neighborhood adorned with charming hidden squares such as Plaza de las Comendadoras and Plaza Guardias de Corps. In recent years, this authentic area, characterized by winding cobblestone streets lined with traditional taverns and bars, has welcomed a variety of modern stores, vintage shops, bars, restaurants, and establishments with unique character, making it one of Madrid’s most distinctive neighborhoods.

Today, Conde Duque boasts its distinctive vibe: bohemian and peaceful with a hip, alternative atmosphere and a lively cultural scene, featuring historical palaces, churches, and museums.

The neighborhood developed around the former military headquarters, the Grand Conde Duque, which dates back to the 18th century. In 2011, this historic barracks was transformed into the Conde Duque Cultural Center—a hidden gem and one of Madrid’s largest cultural hubs, alongside Matadero and CentroCentro. The center is housed in a magnificent baroque-style building with an intricately carved stone entrance and a spacious central courtyard, serving as a vibrant hub for art, music, and literature enthusiasts alike.

Some of the treasures to be found here are the spectacular Liria Palace, built in 1773, home of the foundation of the House of Alba -one of Spain’s most preeminent noble families- among the Convent of the Comendadoras de Santiago el Mayor and the Instituto de España (former Novitiate of the Jesuits). They are joined by the Museo ABC (Drawing and Illustration Museum), and Fundación Telefónica.
